Why GFRP instead of steel

Eight reasons a crew stops arguing after one job

GFRP is not a cheaper steel bar. It is a different material with a different failure mode — which is the entire reason it gets specified where water, salt, weight or electrical neutrality matter.

It cannot rust

No corrosion means no expansion, no spalling and no rust staining. The reason GFRP gets specified near water, salt and de-icing chemicals in the first place.

9x lighter than steel

A bundle two people can carry. Less strain on the crew, fewer bodies on the tie, and freight that does not eat the margin on the job.

Higher tensile strength

ASTM-tested tensile strength in the 800–1400 MPa range depending on bar and lot — well above conventional carbon steel reinforcement.

Non-magnetic, non-conductive

The right answer for MRI suites, transformer pads, rail corridors and anywhere stray current or magnetic interference is a problem.

The coil advantage

Steel cannot be sold in a coil. This can.

Curved sidewalks, pool decks, round pads, radius footings and long continuous runs are all built out of straight sticks today — which means cutting, chording the curve with short pieces, planning laps and stacking offcuts.

A coil changes the sequence. Store it on a pallet instead of a rack, stage it next to the formwork, control the free end, follow the radius, tie as required, and cut once at the end of the run.

The easiest first job for any concrete crew.

Slab on grade is where most contractors meet GFRP for the first time. Lighter to carry, nothing to rust through a 4 in slab, and no rust bleed on a decorative or stained finish.

Do you actually have rebar in stock in the US right now?
Yes. That is the whole point of this page. Straight bar in the common sizes and coiled bar are held in US warehouse inventory, with pickup by appointment and regional delivery quoted by order size and distance. What sizes and forms can I get?
Straight bar from #3 through #8 (roughly 10 mm to 25 mm), coiled bar in the smaller diameters for flatwork and radius work, and bent pieces — L-bars, U-bars, corner bars and stirrups — produced to your bar list. The availability table above is the current stock picture.
What is GFRP rebar?
Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer reinforcing bar: continuous glass fibers in a cured resin matrix, with a deformed or sand-coated surface for bond. It is used in place of steel reinforcement where corrosion, weight, or electrical and magnetic neutrality matter.
How strong is it compared with steel?
Tensile strength is substantially higher than conventional carbon steel reinforcement — ASTM-tested in the 800 to 1400 MPa range depending on bar and lot. It behaves differently from steel, so design has to follow GFRP provisions rather than being a bar-for-bar substitution. ESR-3920 states the design requirements and conditions of use.
Is it code approved?
RebarX GFRP reinforcing bar holds ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-3920. The report lists the code editions it was evaluated against, the products covered, and the design and installation conditions that apply. Both the report and the certified test summary are downloadable above.
Can my crew cut and place it with normal tools?
Cutting is done with an abrasive or diamond blade on a standard grinder or chop saw — no torch and no rebar shear. Placement uses the same ties, chairs and spacing practice the crew already uses. Bends cannot be made in the field, so bent pieces are produced to order and delivered labelled by mark number.
Why does the coil format matter?
A coil stores in a fraction of the space of a rack of 20 ft sticks, stages faster on a tight site, follows curved and circular formwork continuously, and gets cut once at the end of the run instead of being built up from short pieces. On radius flatwork and pool decks that is a measurable labour difference.
How does the price compare to steel?
Compare it per job rather than per pound — bar count, freight, handling labour and the crew size needed all move. Send the bar list or the slab dimensions and you will get a like-for-like comparison against your current steel package for that specific job.
Can I get samples before I commit?
Yes. Short sample pieces in the sizes you are considering, plus the technical documents, go out on request — useful for showing a crew, an inspector or an engineer what the material actually is.
Do you sell to distributors and supply yards?
Yes. Stocking programmes, volume pricing and regional arrangements are available for supply houses and yards that want one reinforcement line covering flatwork, foundation, pool and marine contractors.
Does it work in marine and salt exposure?
Marine, coastal and de-icing salt exposure is the strongest case for GFRP, because chloride-driven corrosion of steel is the failure mode being removed. Seawalls, docks, coastal slabs and pool shells are all standard applications.
